How to Hire a Kitchen Remodeling Contractor

Kitchen remodeling contractors redesign and rebuild kitchens: cabinets, countertops, layout, lighting, plumbing, ventilation and appliance hookups. The kitchen concentrates more trades and more decisions than any other room, so planning, ordering and sequencing make or break the schedule. Consider a remodel when storage, workflow or failing cabinets and counters no longer serve you.

What to check before you hire

• Ask who handles design and whether you will get detailed drawings and elevations before ordering cabinets.
• Confirm permits for any electrical, plumbing, gas or structural changes, and that licensed trades will do that work.
• Check that the range hood will be properly sized and vented, and ask about makeup air if your area requires it.
• Ask how they sequence countertop templating after cabinets are installed to avoid delays.
• Look at completed kitchens and ask references about staying on schedule and handling surprises.

Questions to ask every contractor

• What are the lead times for the cabinets and counters you recommend?
• Can we set up a temporary kitchen while the work is underway?
• Will new appliances need dedicated circuits or a larger gas line?
• How do you handle damage or delays in ordered materials?

Frequently asked questions

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Construction often takes several weeks to a few months, depending on scope. Design decisions and cabinet and countertop lead times can add significant time before demolition starts.

Should I change the kitchen layout?

Moving sinks, gas lines or walls increases complexity and cost. Keeping the main plumbing and appliance locations often lets more of the budget go toward cabinets and finishes.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel?

Replacing cabinets and counters alone may not need one, but new circuits, plumbing changes, gas work or wall removal typically do. Check with your local building department.
