Painting Contractors in New Jersey

How to Hire a Painting Contractor in New Jersey

Painting contractors handle interior and exterior painting, staining, cabinet refinishing, drywall touch-ups and surface preparation. Preparation, not the final coat, determines how long a paint job lasts: cleaning, scraping, sanding, repairing and priming are where professional crews earn their fee. Hire one when paint is peeling or faded, before selling, or when you want a clean, lasting finish without spending weekends on ladders.

What to check before you hire

• Ask exactly what prep is included, such as washing, scraping, caulking, patching and priming, and get it in writing.
• For homes built before 1978, confirm the contractor is lead-safe certified under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule.
• Ask which paint brand and product line they will use and how many coats are included.
• Confirm how they will protect floors, furniture, landscaping and fixtures.
• Verify liability insurance, especially for exterior work on ladders or lifts.

Questions to ask every contractor

• How will you repair peeling, cracked or damaged surfaces before painting?
• What sheen do you recommend for each room or surface?
• How long will the job take, and how will weather affect exterior work?
• Will you leave touch-up paint labeled by room?

Frequently asked questions

How often should I repaint my house exterior?

It depends on siding material, climate, sun exposure and the quality of the last job. Watch for fading, chalking, cracking or peeling as signs it is time.

What is included in a painting estimate?

A good estimate lists surfaces, prep work, number of coats, products, colors and cleanup. Vague quotes make it hard to compare contractors fairly.

Can cabinets be painted instead of replaced?

Solid cabinets in good shape often can be. Cabinet painting requires thorough cleaning, sanding, priming and a durable finish, so hire someone who does it regularly.
